7 Signs Your Gutters Need Cleaning After Winter
After a full winter of rain and debris, gutters tend to collect more buildup than most homeowners expect.
From the ground, everything can look fine. But once we’re up there, it’s pretty common to find gutters packed with leaves, dirt, and debris that built up over the season.
Most of the time, homeowners don’t realize there’s an issue until water stops draining properly or starts overflowing.
Here are some of the most common signs we see that gutters need attention after winter.
1. Water Is Overflowing Instead of Draining
One of the most obvious signs is water spilling over the sides of the gutters during rain.
This usually means the system is blocked and water isn’t moving through the way it should.
2. You Can See Plants or Debris Growing in the Gutters
If you can see anything growing out of your gutters, they’ve likely been holding debris for a while.
At that point, it’s more than just leaves sitting there. It’s compacted buildup.
3. Downspouts Aren’t Draining Properly
Even if gutters look okay, the downspouts can be completely blocked.
We often find:
Packed debris
Mud buildup
Acorn Buildup
Water not flowing through
This causes water to back up into the entire system.
4. Water Is Running Down the Siding
When gutters overflow or don’t drain correctly, water starts running down the exterior of the home.
Over time, that can lead to staining or damage if it’s left unchecked.
5. Gutters Feel Heavy or Start to Sag
Wet debris adds a lot of weight.
If gutters are holding water and buildup, they can begin to sag or pull away slightly from the roofline.
6. You Haven’t Had Them Cleaned in Over a Year
Even if you’re not seeing obvious issues, gutters that haven’t been cleaned in a while usually have buildup.
Winter tends to make that worse.
7. You Just Went Through a Full Rainy Season
Even if nothing looks wrong yet, a full season of rain is usually enough to justify a cleaning.
It’s one of those things that’s easier to stay ahead of than fix later.
What We Typically See on Homes
On most gutter cleanings after winter, we find:
Packed leaves and debris
Blocked downspouts
Areas where water isn’t draining correctly
Once cleared out, everything flows the way it’s supposed to again.
When to Get Them Cleaned
Spring is one of the best times to clean gutters after winter buildup. For many homes, this is enough to reset the system before heading into the rest of the year.
Homes with more trees or debris may need more frequent cleanings.
